Our Project SitesBridges to Community is committed to positive global change, and to further our mission we've worked with a number of world-wide organizations in a number of countries to more effectively utilize and share our resources and provide a broader range of possible experiences for our participants. Our close ties, long-term relationships, and developed infrastructure in Nicaragua, however, allow us to provide a deeper and richer experience there for many travellers, and allow our projects to make many significant changes in the lives of the communities with whom we work. While we will continue to explore new communities and new partner organizations with which to work, Nicaragua is the focus of our current efforts. Why Nicaragua?Nicaragua is the second poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere (behind Haiti). The country faces low per capita income, massive unemployment and external debt. The history of Nicaragua is also closely connected to the history of the U.S. as well-- since the nineteenth century, at least, U.S. intervention in Nicaragua has led to bloodshed and economic hardship for many Nicaraguans. Their close proximity to the U.S. geographically is also a strong reason for us to work there. Perhaps more important, though, are the hospitality, beauty, and warmth of the Nicaraguan people who work with Bridges volunteers. Our SitesCurrently, we work in four areas in Nicaragua: Masaya, Guanacastillo, Ticuantepe, and Siuna. While we strive to make the Bridges experience consistent, each of these sites is different, and offers new persepctives on the Nicaraguan people and culture, while presenting our travellers with new challenges. |
