Introducing Dr. Daysi -- Another Bridges Young Professional Achiever
"When I was little there was no access to health care in my small community of Pilas Orientale. We could only get medical attention if we could find transportation to a larger community. I always wanted to be a doctor in order to provide medical care in my community," states Daysi, a Bridges scholarship recipient.
Seventeen days before this interview with Daysi, she had just obtained her official Nicaraguan license to practice medicine. It took her eight long years of study in university with a scholarship from Bridges in order to become a doctor. Now that she has become one, she wants to continue her education to become a gynecologist/obstetrician as she feels strongly that the women in the country are especially in need of better medical care. An anonymous donor has given Daysi a grant to pay for this advanced degree.
Currently Daysi is volunteering in a health clinic, that Bridges helped to build, as she is committed to serving to her community and giving back to those who helped her get her education. Ultimately, it is up to the Nicaraguan government to say where Daysi will practice medicine in the country, however, at the moment there is no money available to pay doctors so she continues her work in the local clinic in Masaya.
Daysi tells, "Ever since I could think, I wanted to be a doctor. My father said to me that there was not enough money and tried to convince me to be a nurse instead. I told him that I would only be a doctor and nothing less. Without Bridges I would have had no chance to study. I owe many thanks to Bridges to Community and its supporters for this opportunity."
