Gioconda-Computer Teacher and Law Student is a Bridges Double Success Story
Gioconda, who is from Los Lopez in Masaya, is accomplishing an amazing feat for a young woman from a community in Nicaragua where much of the populace does not even complete elementary school. Through the educational scholarship program from Bridges, Gioconda has almost obtained not one, but two university degrees.
Her first scholarship allowed her to become a certified computer teacher and for several years now, Gioconda has been the primary instructor for the Masaya computer program. Thanks to Bridges donors who have funded it, the computer program has expanded this past year. And while this intelligent, hardworking young woman is teaching up to 300 children and adults these essential technical skills, she is also attending law school part time with another Bridges’ scholarship.
“I started to study law for myself, to learn my legal rights as well as the rights for other people. Especially women often don’t know our rights and I wanted to learn how to protect myself and other women,” says Gioconda, Masaya school computer teacher, will graduate from law school in Nicaragua in the year 2012.
Gioconda’s dream of working in criminal law and representing women in need is about to come true as she said, “Bridges changed my life because they opened doors of hope – to study and learn. Now I want to help others with that education,”
